A Victory for the Campaigners of the Victims of the Hillsborough Disaster – Secret Files on the Hillsborough Tragedy to be Released 10 Years Early
- Twenty years on and there is a now a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel -
After a week of commemorations to remember the 96 who lost their lives at Hillsborough, the Home Secretary has agreed to release 100’s of secret files relating to the tragedy, 10 years early. –
At the remembrance ceremonies, all the emotions were as raw, and feelings of injustice, just as strong as they were 20 years ago, and they were prominently on display for the world to see.
The ‘Hillsborough Disaster’ is something that will simply not go away and it cannot be swept under the carpet any longer.
Hillsborough needs an answer. The victim’s families are entitled to many questions being answered 20 years on after the Hillsborough tragedy occurred.
Families of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster have been campaigning since the result of the original enquiry which gave ‘Accidental Death’ as the cause of the loss of the lives of the 96 brothers.
‘The coroner, Dr Stefan Popper, limited the main inquest to events up until 3:15pm on the day of the disaster - just nine minutes after the match was halted and the crowd began to spill onto the pitch.
Popper said this was because all of the victims were either dead, or brain dead, by 3:15pm. This statement apparently fails to take the fatalities of Lee Nicol or Tony Bland into account.
This decision angered the families of the victims, many of whom felt this meant the inquest was not able to consider the response of the police and the other emergency services after that time’.
At the culmination of the trial, the jury at the inquest returned a verdict of accidental death with a majority of nine to two.
The court erupted with the shouts and cries of the victim’s families who were devastated at the injustice that they had just been served.
One ambulance had been allowed onto the pitch to tend to the 96 dying people when many more ambulances waited outside. Why? - This, and so many more questions that demand an answer hang in the air.
No-one was ultimately held accountable; just a collective police force. No-one lost their job. Things were covered up and hushed up and there was to be no closure for the victim’s families.
All they were left with was feelings of huge loss, anger and bitterness for the injustice that they had been dealt.
‘Accidental Death’ was a cruel conclusion to the heartbreak that the families had been through since that fateful day when, penned in like animals, and fighting for their lives, very little was done to save the dying 96.
There is now news that the Home Secretary has given permission for the 100’s of official ‘secret files’ concerning the ‘Hillsborough Disaster’ which by ruling, lay dormant for 30 years, to now be made public, 10 years early.
A request had gone in to the South Yorkshire Police Force for the files to be released, to which the families requested an assurance that these files will not be ‘doctored’ before they get to scrutinise them.
This will be a massive victory for the families who may now get to learn the truth behind the lies of April 15th, 1989.
Trevor Hicks who lost both his daughters at Hillsborough wants to know: “Who exactly co-ordinated the cover up?” -
“why the police weren’t prosecuted” and “why the police statements were altered”.
Margaret Aspinall, who lost a son, said: “This will never go away” – “We will keep fighting this till we get to the truth.”-
Well, this is one step closer to it and I just hope and pray that these files will not reveal yet another cover-up to plunge the families into further despair and disappointment.
The families of the tragic victims of the Hillsborough disaster will never have closure until they feel that justice has been seen to be served in the name of the innocent 96 loyal football fans who lost their lives at Leppings Lane. –

Another absolutely brilliant writeup from you! And how pleasing it is to know that at last some answers will (hopefully) be provided to the families of the 96 that lost their lives at Hillsborough. I’m glad that the secret files are to be released 10 years early; 30 years is far too long a time to wait for answers, and the 20 that it is already is bad enough.
It’s disgraceful that noone took responsibility for what happened on that day. The fact that only one ambulance was let in; so many more lives could perhaps have been saved, and yet a verdict of ‘Accidental death’ was given? It’s just absolutely disgusting.
So many people failed their jobs that day; the stewards and police for starters, and yet no blame was ever officially placed upon anyone, and no one lost their job as a result of what happened. It was all handled so badly, and the coverup of it all must be so terrible for those that lost their loved ones.
Finally the concealed information is going to be revealed, and as you say; we’re now one step closer to finding out the truth. If it is more cover-ups and lies though then I feel that the revealing of this information will probably do more harm than good. The families will be so upset and angry if it’s more cover-ups, and it’ll just be so unfair on them.
As I said before; this is another absolutely incredible article from you, and as always; when I read it, it just made me feel so proud. You know how proud I am of you and your writing, and every time I read your work it makes me feel more so. You truly are an incredibly talented woman, and never do you cease to amaze me with your talent, creativity, and style. I’m so proud of you.
