My Top 10 Christmas Songs - All Time Great Christmas Songs - Christmas Carols - Happy Christmas Songs - Christmas Youtubes
- MY TOP 10 CHRISTMAS SONGS OF ALL TIME -
Christmas, that magical time of year is almost here and I have compiled a list of my most favourite Christmas songs. A lot of Christmas songs tend to err on the cheesy side but as its Christmas we are quite forgiving of this. Basically, anything that gets us into the Christmas spirit is acceptable and some of the staunch, old die-hards are definitely the best.
There is a lot of sentiment attached to Christmas, and a lot of the songs deal with heartbreak and missing a partner. Alternately, a lot of the songs are uplifting and deal with the true nature of Christmas and there is much to be said for a good Christmas Carol.
There are also a lot of really silly, gimmicky songs brought out around this time of year, but it all adds to the atmosphere, excitement and build-up to the big day and music and carols are a huge part of Christmas.
Here I have listed ‘My’ Top 10 Favourite Christmas Songs, starting with my most favourite. I have included Youtubes with each entry so you can sing along.
1: The POGUES and Kirsty MacColl – Fairytale of New York
As far as I am concerned this is the ultimate and definitive Christmas song which features the late Kirsty MacColl. There is just something really special about this song that really strikes a chord with me and a lot of other people too.

2: Alexander Burke - Hallelujah
This is a truly incredible song and is considered one of the greatest songs of all time. I have chosen the Alexander Burke cover but all well known versions of this song are equally great in their different interpretations. This song will feature every Christmas from now on, as if it has always been here and it embodies the true spiritual nature of Christmas.

3: Mariah Carey – All I want For Christmas is you
I just love this song. It conjures up visions of Christmas for me. With the sleigh bells and brilliant lyrics and melody. This song really gets me in the Christmas spirit. It is also incredibly well sung By Mariah. The video to this song is lovely and very Christmas’y also.

4: Merry Christmas Everybody - SLADE – (Here it is Merry Christmas)
Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without this song! Noddy Holder and Slade perform this rousing Christmas Anthem and no Christmas party is complete without Holder screeching ‘It’s Christmas’ at the end of this raucous Christmas number.
This is just such a feel-Good song and seems to encapsulate every thing that Christmas is all about and every time that I hear it, it captures the total atmosphere of Christmas. A real 70’s Christmas Anthem and One of the best atmospheric Xmas songs ever made.

6: John Lennon - So This is Christmas - Happy Christmas (War Is Over)
The lyric is based on a campaign in late 1969 by John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, who rented billboards and posters in eleven cities around the world that read: “WAR IS OVER! (If You Want It) Happy Christmas from John and Yoko”. wikepedia.

10: Seven O’Clock News - Silent Night - Simon and Garfunkel
A lesser known song but I think it is a very profound song to listen to at Christmas time. The background lyrics might be dated now but they can certainly translate to the wars and times of today. A really strong message contained within this song which is set to the Christmas Carol, Silent Night.

It’s very hard to choose 10 favourites but I think I’ve covered the ones I like the best and of course no Christmas list would be complete without my next song which makes my list run over. But who cares?! - It’s Christmas!! - : )

White Christmas – Bing Crosby

Some absolutely excellent choices there! Can’t stand the Band Aid song, but I certainly agree with you about The Pogues! What a brilliant Christmas song that really is. East 17s ‘Stay Another Day’ is a great track that always gets played at Christmas as well; a Christmas Number One back in 1994! Excellent.
Really enjoyed reading through your list; there are certainly a lot of excellent choices there, and a lot of great tracks to really get you in the Christmas spirit. Nice decision in addind a number eleven too; who could ever forget Bing Crosby’s ‘White Christmas’.
A nice festive blog post from you for Christmas; very well written, and also a lot of fun for the festive season. Yet another brilliant blog entry from you, and another that really made me smile as I read through it.
